The disciples were afraid. That storm must have been very severe for skilled sailors like them to fear for their lives. But after the sudden storm, the even more sudden stillness commanded by Jesus must have shocked them! In Mark 4:41, the disciples responded: “They were terrified and asked each other, ‘Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!’” In the early chapters of Mark, the disciples had seen Jesus’ power to heal the sick and cast out supernatural demons. Now they see his power over all of God’s creation. They were fearfully in awe of the man who controlled the wind and the waves.

Jesus scolded his disciples, asking them, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” The lesson here is that Jesus was onboard, so the boat wasn’t going to sink. Today, we need to remember that Jesus is with us when we are scared. Do you feel safe in his presence?
