Episode ThemeIdolatry-Discerning. Finding identity and acceptance in God rather than man.
You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
Have you ever been a show-off? Have you ever said, “Look at me! Look at me!”
Some people like to have the approval of others. We might all like to have someone say, “Good job”, or “I like what you did”, or “You are great”.
Jesus gave some advice about how not to be a show off. He was talking about how some people prayed publically so that they could get attention. In Matthew 6:5-6, he said, “When you pray, don’t be like those show-offs who love to stand up and pray in the meeting places and on the street corners. They do this just to look good. I can assure you that they already have their reward.”
According to Jesus, when a person is a showoff, he or she gets a very small reward. They get the attention of others (which only lasts a short time).
Jesus continued by talking about someone doing things for the right reason: “When you pray, go into a room alone and close the door. Pray to your Father in private. He knows what is done in private, and he will reward you.”
God knows what you do, and he will reward you. Our work and our service need to focus on what God wants us to do. God’s reward sounds a lot better than the short attention span of other people. With our actions and our words, let’s point people to God instead of showing off.
