What a demanding life Deborah had! She was a judge in Israel. She spent her days listening to the Israelites’ problems and then deciding cases and settling problems among them.
Unfortunately, Israel had been conquered by another country with a wicked king. This king loved being cruel to the Israelites. After 20 years of being slaves, the Israelites cried to the Lord to save them.
God heard their cries and was ready to help. He turned to Deborah and told her how he planned to save her nation? Deborah listened to God’s instructions and spread the exciting news that God had decided it was time to end the cruel reign of the foreign king. Then Deborah sent for a man named Barak. She told him, “ The Lord is giving you a command. Take 10,000 men and lead them to Mount Tabor. The Lord will draw your enemy into a trap. He will hand the commander of the army and all of his soldiers and chariots to you.”
But Barak was scared. He was so scared that he told Deborah, “If you go with me, I’ll go. But if you don’t go with me, I won’t go.” What did Deborah do? She trusted God. “All right, “she said, “I’ll go with you.”
So Deborah got to watch God in action. She saw God scatter 900 chariots. She saw Barak’s men strike down all the enemy soldiers. She saw the enemy commander run away and the Israelites achieve a great victory.
We should be like Deborah. When we listen to God’s plan and follow his instructions, we too may get to be part of an exciting event. Listen for God’s words for you and obey his instructions. They just may be the beginning of a great adventure!
