Episode ThemeCommunity-Building: Peacemaking
Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called the children of God.
Being stuck between fighting friends is a lousy place to be. What do you say to one
friend without being disloyal to the other friend? Each friend wants you to choose sides. But whose side do you choose? Can you help two friends to stop fighting? Is it possible?
Now imagine that you are stuck in the middle between an angry God and some Israelites who want a new god. That’s just the spot that Moses found himself in. Moses had walked up a mountain to talk with God (can you imagine what that must have been like? Wow!). Moses was gone so long that the Israelites decided they needed a new god, one that they could actually see. So they asked Moses’ brother to create a statue of a calf made of gold. When God saw what the Israelites had done, he was so angry that he told Moses, “I will destroy them.”
What would you do if you were Moses? Would you be afraid of God’s anger? Would you be angry with the Israelites? Would you take God’s side or the Israelites’ side? Those are tough questions to answer. Being stuck in the middle is always a tough place to be because there are no easy answers.
God understands how difficult it is to be a peacemaker, to try to get two angry groups to be at peace with each other. In the book of Matthew, Jesus says, “Blessed are those who make peace. They will be called children of God.”
If you are ever called upon to be a peacemaker, congratulations! God asks His children to make peace. If you’re worried about being a peacemaker, let God know. He’s got lots of experience at peace-making and is willing and able to help you—even in the most impossible peace-making situations!
