And we know in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
What scares you? What do you do when something or someone is scaring you? Gideon knew all about being scared. Gideon was an Israelite, and the Israelites were so scared of their enemies the Midianites that they hid in caves and in holes in mountains. Every time an Israelite planted some crops or tried to raise animals, the Midianites would come and destroy everything. The Midianites were mean, scary, and unbeatable.
God saw what was happening, and he chose Gideon to rescue the Israelites from the Midianites. How would you feel if God chose you? Gideon was scared. He was the youngest son from the weakest tribe of Israel, and he was afraid of the Midianites. Before he was ready to follow God’s instructions, Gideon several times asked God to prove himself. God did just that (check out Judges 6: 12-22, 36-40).
Then God told Gideon to gather some men to fight against the Midianites, so Gideon went and recruited 32,000 Israelites. Wow! That many men must have made Gideon feel a little less scared. But God said that was too many men. So, Gideon said that any man who was scared could go home. 22,000 men left, but at least Gideon still had 10,000 men to go with him. Then God said that was still too many; he only wanted 300 men with Gideon. Read Judges 7: 9-22 to see how Gideon and his 300 men drove out the Midianites and rescued Israel.
Gideon was the person God’s chose to rescue Israel from the Midianites, but that didn’t mean Gideon wasn’t scared. God never says we can’t be scared. Gideon told God that he was scared, and God reassured him that God would be with him. When you are scared, tell God. God will comfort you, encourage you, and lead you. No matter how scared you are, you are never completely alone!
