Episode ThemeGod-Worshiping: God’s presence in the midst of hard times.
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds.
Have you ever been in a scary situation? What did you do to give yourself courage? Scary situations happen to everyone, so the best thing to do is to be prepared. How?
Follow Paul’s example. One time he was in a town called Philippi. This town didn’t have any Christians in it, so they were suspicious of Paul. One day Paul healed a slave girl in Jesus’ name, but the slave’s owners were furious with Paul for helping her….so furious they had the town’s police beat Paul and his friend Silas and throw them into jail.
That night, about midnight, Paul and Silas were bruised and bleeding from their flogging. They were in the middle of the jail so it was dark. Their feet were in stocks so they couldn’t stand or move very much at all. Neither of them knew what would come next or how long they would be in jail, or if their punishment would be something worse. They were in a scary situation with no help in sight!
Would you be scared if you were with Paul? The Bible doesn’t tell us how scared they were, but the Bible does tell us what Paul and Silas were doing in the dark jail, at midnight, in pain. They were “praying and singing hymns to God and the other prisoners were listening to them.” What a great idea! Christians know we can always pray to God, but not all Christians sing songs to God when they are scared. And yet, singing the words of the songs connected Paul and Silas to God’s power, to God’s love, to God’s ability to rescue them! The songs gave Paul and Silas courage to face whatever happened the next day and peace that God was still in control of everything!
What about you? Do you have some songs of praise memorized that you can sing to yourself (and to God) the next time you find yourself in a scary place? Be prepared for any scary situation with a song of praise!
