Do not let the world squeeze you into its mold. (Phillips translation)
Have you ever been pressured to do something you didn't want to do? Have you ever been dared to do something scary or dangerous or wrong? Time for a Bible Quiz on peer pressure.
Jesus asked two blind men, "Do you believe I am able to heal you?"
Question 1: Which of Joseph's older brothers didn't want to kill him, hurt him or sell him?
(Gen. 37: 19-32
Question 2: If Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego didn't pray to the king's new statue, what would happen?
Question 3: What did the Jewish religious leaders demand that Peter and John stop doing?
(Acts 4: 1-22
How did you do? Joseph's oldest brother Reuben didn't like Joseph, but he didn't want him to get hurt either. He talked his brothers out of killing Joseph, but they sold Joseph before Reuben could rescue him. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego faced pressure to worship the king's statue. They refused and so were thrown into a fiery furnace that should have burned them. God sent an angel to protect them in the furnace. The religious leaders arrested Peter and John and sternly warned them to stop talking about Jesus...or else! Peter and John replied that they couldn't possibly stop talking about Jesus. No matter what happened to them, they wouldn't stop talking about Jesus.
All these people faced peer pressure to do something they knew was wrong in God's eyes. They all, with God's help, resisted. What about you? What do you do when kids or adults try to force you to do something you know is wrong?
What should you do? Plan ahead. Ask parents or friends or trusted adults what they would do or say. Role play ahead of time what you can do and say when the pressure is on you. Pray. Tell God when you are stuck. He knows. He understands. He will be with you. He can rescue you. Just ask Meshach and his friends!
