Episode ThemeCommunity-Building: The golden rule.
So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
Have you ever heard of “The Golden Rule?” Do you know what it means? Why it is important? Here’s the scoop:
Jesus was preaching about the kingdom of heaven to a great crowd of people. Jesus said, “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 7:12) This is what people call The Golden Rule. What did Jesus mean? How are we to treat other people?
Jesus also told a story to help us figure out how to treat other people. He said, “One day a Jewish man was traveling when some robbers jumped out, took the man’s money and beat him up. The robbers left the man lying in his own blood on the side of the road. A little while later, a minister walked along the same road, saw the man, and passed by on the other side of the road. Soon another man came along the same road, saw the poor man, and quickly walked past him. Finally a Samaritan man came upon the man. Now, Samaritans and Jews were enemies; they hated each other! The Samaritan saw the beaten man was a Jew, but he also saw that he needed help, so the Samaritan man stopped, bandaged up the wounded man, and took him to an inn to rest and to heal.”
How are we to treat others? Exactly how we wish to be treated….with respect….with honesty….with kindness! How? Keep a picture of the Good Samaritan in your head. When you are with friends, teachers, adults, kids you don’t know or don’t like, remember how the Good Samaritan stopped to be kind to an enemy of his. Think about how you want to be treated, and make sure your words and actions reflect it.
Here’s another idea: take a ruler and cover it with gold glitter or foil to help you remember that the Golden Rule means we want to treat others the way Jesus treats us!
