Community-Building: Cooperation

Memory Verse

Ecclesiastes 4:9

Two people are better than one. They can help each other in everything they do.

“Did you hear what the king just said?”

“No. What’s going on?”

“The king said that anyone who doesn’t bow down to him today will be thrown into a furnace and burned alive.”

“What are we going to do?  We only worship the Lord.  We can’t worship the king!”

“Then we are toast.”

“At least we’ll be toast together.”

Have you ever heard of three friends named Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego?  They had a real problem.  If they didn’t forget about the Lord and start worshipping the king, they would be thrown into a blazing furnace.  What did they do?

“You three young men.  Come here.”

“Yes, King.”

“Worship me now!”

“We are sorry, King, but we will worship only our Lord.”

“Will your Lord save you from my fiery furnace?”

“That is our Lord’s decision.  Whether he saves us or not, we will worship only him.”

“Then into the furnace you go. Now!”

So the three friends were tossed into the furnace together.  Suddenly, the king saw four men walking inside the furnace.  None were harmed by the fire. When the king asked Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego what happened they replied,

“We are fine, King.  An angel protected us.”

Everyone, praised the Lord, even the king.

If you ever have to stand for the Lord, do it with a friend.  Working for the Lord with a friend at your side is the best way to worship God.  Just ask Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego! ( You can read the whole story in Daniel 3.)
