Resisting temptation

Memory Verse

Matthew 26:41

Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.

What tempts you? What can you just not say "NO!" to? Have you ever wondered why some things are so hard to resist? Then you should meet Eve.

Eve had everything she could ever want. Her husband, Adam, loved her perfectly. Her home was paradise-a perfect garden with lots of good things to eat. No hard work. No sickness. No fighting. Each day Adam and Eve went walking and talking with God.

God told Adam, "You are to take care of the Garden of Eden. You are free to eat from any tree in the garden, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it, you will surely die."

Eve knew all the things she could do in the garden. She knew the one thing she must never do in the garden. No bad thing ever happened to Eve until...the serpent came to visit.

The serpent was really Satan in disguise. He also knew the one thing Eve must never do, so he tried to tempt her to do it. He told her lies about God and lies about the fruit from the tree. Eve should have run far away from the serpent's lies. Eve should have called to God. Instead Eve listened to the serpent's lies. She was tempted by his words...so tempted that she really wanted to eat that fruit...so tempted that she ate the forbidden fruit.

What happened? Death. Sin. Guilt. Fighting. Anger. Separation from God. All these bad things entered the garden-not just for Eve, but for everyone, including you.

What should you do the next time you are tempted by something you know is bad for you? Run from it. Pray for strength to say "NO!" Ask God to help you resist. God can, and God will help you say "NO!" All you have to do is ask.
