Episode ThemeIdolatry-Discerning: Wanting it all.
Be on guard against every form of greed; life is not in possessions.
Have you ever been tempted by greed? By wanting something so much that you didn’t care about anything else? If greed has ever grabbed hold of your heart, you should meet Lot.
Lot was the nephew of Abraham and Sarah. Since Lot’s father was dead, he traveled and lived with Abraham. Lot had inherited flocks of sheep and goats, servants, and even tents. For a young man living with his aunt and uncle, Lot had a lot of stuff.
One day Uncle Abraham said to Lot, “You and I have too many animals for this land, so I think we should separate a little. Look around. You choose which direction you want to move, and I will move the opposite direction.” Wow! Abraham was God’s chosen man. Abraham was older than Lot. It was Abraham who should have chosen where to live—but he freely gave that choice to Lot.
Lot looked around, and greed grabbed his heart. In one direction was land so gorgeous that Lot thought it looked like the garden of the LORD. There was one major issue with that land—it was close to the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.
What do you think Lot did? He could have chosen the land farthest away from the wicked cities. He could have asked for his uncle’s advice. Or he could follow his greedy heart and choose the best looking land. What would you do?
Lot chose the beautiful land and pitched his tent near the town of Sodom. Eventually he moved right into the town. Several years later, the wickedness was so awful in those towns that God destroyed both Sodom and Gomorrah completely. Lot lost everything—he was spared only because of Abraham.
Greed is powerful. It creeps up on us and grabs a powerful hold on us. The next time you feel greed wrapping its fingers around your heart, stop. Tell God immediately that you need his power to remove greed’s power over you. If you don’t stop greed, it will eventually consume you—just ask Lot!
