Episode ThemeIdolatry-Discerning: Choosing God’s way over the world’s way.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.
First read 1 Kings 3: 1-15.
Solomon was a wise king the Bible tells us. But it wasn’t always so.
Solomon loved the Lord and followed the example that his father David had set for him. He worshiped God often and made sacrifices to God at holy places.
At one of these places, God appeared to Solomon in a dream and said, “Solomon, ask for anything you want, and I will give it to you.”
God was willing to give Solomon anything. Solomon had to choose. Do you think it was an easy choice or difficult one?
Solomon answers God by saying that His father David had been God’s servant, and that God had always been with David. Solomon then commits to being God’s servant too as the new king of Israel. But he asks God for help! Solomon says that he is young and has a lot to learn. He feels a lot of responsibility.
So he asks God to make him wise and to “teach me the difference between right and wrong”.
That is what discernment is: being wise and knowing the difference between right and wrong. But being discerning is not enough. Adam and Eve knew right and wrong, and they chose the wrong way. Later in Solomon’s life, he knew right and wrong, and he chose the wrong way too. Do you ever choose the wrong way even when you know what’s right?
We need to pray like Solomon. We need to pray for discernment, and we need to commit to being God’s servant too. Wisdom + Service to God helps us make the good choices.
