Episode ThemeIdolatry-Discerning: Why love is better.
Perfect love drives out fear.
What is the best way to draw people closer to God? How can we lead people to want to know Jesus as their personal Savior and Friend? Time for a Bible Quiz on how to lead people to God!
- How many people did Noah save on the ark? (Genesis 6-7)
- How many people did Jesus feed at one time? (Matthew 14)
- How did Dorcas lead people to Jesus? (Acts 9)
How did you do? Noah knew about God’s coming judgment—that’s why he built the ark. The only other people who acted to avoid God’s judgment on their sins were in Noah’s family: his wife, his sons, and his sons’ wives. Jesus taught more than 5,000 people about God, but he also took care of their needs. He took just a little bit of bread and fish and created so much food that not only was everyone full, but here were also enough leftovers to fill a dozen baskets. The Bible says that Dorcas was “always doing good and helping the poor.” After she died, the widows stood by Peter “crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made (Acts 9).”
What does this mean for us? Telling people that God is going to judge them for their sins is true, but it didn’t seem to lead many people to God. If scaring people about God doesn’t work, what does? Serving others. Showing people what God’s love looks like. Caring for others just because God loves us makes people curious and open to the possibility of a relationship with God. Jesus showed God’s love when he stopped to feed so many people. Dorcas made God real by taking care of people around her.
What about you? What can you do for someone? How can you show the love of God to someone who is far from him? Think of a specific person. Write down ideas of ways you can draw that person closer to God through your actions. Pray and talk to God about your ideas. Ask for his help—and then do it!
