God-Worshiping: Prayer and action

Memory Verse

Romans 12:12

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

Nehemiah 4:9

But we prayed to our God and posted a guard.

What if it was you who had to do it? Would you do it, knowing you could be killed? What if you were in Queen Esther's shoes?

Queen Esther was not born a princess. She was a young Jewish girl living in a foreign country where sometimes people were mean to Jews.

One day the king needed a new queen. Esther and lots of other girls were taken into a special palace and prepared to meet the king. The king would choose one of these girls to be his queen. Esther was the one he chose. Because some people really hated Jewish people, Esther's older cousin had told her not to tell anyone that she was a Jewish girl.

Later, the king signed a law that said all Jews could be murdered and their belongings stolen. When Esther's cousin heard the news, he went to Esther. He told her she was the only one who could prevent this mass killing of their people.

Esther said, "Wait a minute. I'm just the queen. It's the king who runs this country. He hasn't even seen me in a month. If I just show up at his throne without his permission, he'll probably kill me and find a new queen. I can't save our people by myself. I can't."

Her cousin said, "Maybe God made you queen for just this time." So Esther told him, "Okay, you round up every Jewish person in our city and tell them all to fast and pray for me for three days. Then I will go see the king. If he kills me, he kills me. If he doesn', I will try to save our people."

Wow! That's prayer in action. Esther didn't want to go see the king. Esther asked for prayers from lots of people. Then she went ahead and approached the king without permission. God heard the prayers of her people, the king was delighted to see her and saved the Jewish people in his kingdom.

Then next time you've got to do something scary, follow Esther's example. Ask someone to pray for you first. Then, armed with these prayers, follow God's lead. He won't let you down.
