A friend loves at all times.
Picture this in your head: you are best friends with Jesus. He knows you by name. You spend every day with him—helping him, listening to him, being his friend. One day, Jesus is exhausted. He has preached about the kingdom of God and healed more sick people than you can count. Still the crowds of people want him to do more. Jesus tells you (imagine: You!) that he is tired and needs some quiet. Then he asks you to sail a boat to the other side of the Sea of Galilee while he gets some rest.
As you sail, because you would do anything for your friend Jesus, he sleeps. You feel proud that he trusts you to help him. Suddenly, without any warning, the wind whips up. The waves increase. A violent storm rolls across the sea before you can sail to a safe harbor. You are in the middle of the water with a storm overtaking you. You struggle to keep the boat afloat. The waves threaten to swamp the boat, yet Jesus sleeps on. You are terrified that the boat will sink and you are going to drown. What do you do?
Of course, you wake your friend Jesus! You anxiously tell him to see the storm. You beg him to help you. He sits up, looks around, and calmly says, “Quiet. Be still.” Just like that the storm moves off; you, Jesus, and the boat are safe once again. What an amazing friend you have!
Jesus wants to be your personal friend. He wants to listen to you, laugh with you, and help when you are worried. Jesus also wants to be included in all of your friendships. He wants to help you choose friends and teach you how to be a good friend. When Jesus is your friend, you can survive any storm that comes along!
