Taking Care of Business

God-Worshiping: Exercise your faith muscles!

Memory Verse

Nahum 1:7

The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him.

What if it were you? What would you do? Here's the scoop: You are an Israelite living in miserable conditions. Your enemy, the king of Canaan, has been in control over Israel for twenty years. Life under the Canaanites is awful. They are really, really cruel. You can't do anything to stop them because they have 900 iron chariots and are not afraid to use them! If anyone went up against those iron chariots, they would be crushed immediately!

Then one day Deborah, a prophet, (prophets bring God's word to his people) calls for you. She says, "Congratulations, God has heard the cries of his people and will deliver us. God has chosen you to lead 10,000 men and defeat the cruel Canaanites!"

How would you feel? Excited that God chose you? Scared about leading so many men? Afraid of the iron chariots? What would you do? Here's what happened. Deborah was the prophet who told Barak he would deliver the Israelites with God's help. How did Barak react? He said to Deborah, "What? Me? Against 900 iron chariots? Hmmmm, how about I'll go into battle if you, a woman, go with me. If you won't go, then I won't either."

Not much faith in God! Yet, the story doesn't end here. Deborah said, "I'll go because I trust in God's promises." So Barak led the Israelite army, and with God's power totally destroyed every single chariot and enemy soldier. The book of Hebrews even lists Barak as a hero of faith (see Hebrews 11:32).

What about you? Are you facing trouble-iron chariots or not, facing trouble is scary. What do you do? Feel scared? Run away? Hold on to God's promises? Here's a great promise to hold on to in times of trouble: "The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him" (Nahum 1:7). God won't let you down-just ask Barak!
