Image- Reflecting: Controlling your tongue

Memory Verse

James 3:3-5

We put a bit in the mouth of a horse to make it obey us.  We can control the whole animal with it.  And how about ships?  They are very big.  They are driven along by the strong winds.  But they are steered by a very small rudder.  It makes them go where the captain wants them to go.  In the same way they tongue is a small part of the body.  But it brags a lot.  Think about how a small spark can set a big forest on fire.”

Has your tongue ever gotten you into trouble? Have you ever said something that you didn't really mean to say? Have your words ever hurt someone's feelings? The Bible book of James talks about the power of our tongues-power to help and to hurt. Try this tongue quiz from James.

Question 1: How do we make a horse obey us?
(James 3:3)

Question 2: How do you steer a huge ship?
(James 3: 4)

Question 3: What can set a huge forest on fire?
(James 3:5)

Question 4: We can tame animals, birds, reptiles, even creatures in the sea. There is one thing that we cannot control. What is it?
(James 3: 7-8

How did you do? A small bit placed in the mouth of a horse is used to make the horse obey commands. A small rudder steers the biggest of ships. A tiny spark can set a whole forest ablaze. The tongue is one thing that we humans just can't seem to completely control. All of these small things-a bit, a rudder, a spark, the tongue-have enormous power.

James says the same tongue that sings praises to the Lord can also hurt other people. Even though we have been made new in Christ, we don't always control our tongues and our words well enough. What should we do about our tongues? Ask for God's help. Pray, right now, that God will take control over your tongue and give you words to help the people around you. God understands the power of our tongues. He wants to help, and He is the only one who can help control our tongues.
