Idolatry-Discerning: Wanting More.

Memory Verse

Luke 12:15

Be on your guard against wanting to have more and more things. Life is not made up of how much a person has.

Do you ever wish you had more things? Do you ever look at what someone else has and feel bad? Jesus understood that we always seem to want more and more. In fact, he told a story about it.

One day, Jesus told a crowd of people, "Watch out! Be on your guard against wanting to have more and more things. Life is not made up of how much a person has."

Then Jesus told a story about a rich man. This rich man gathered in his crops. He had grown so much grain that his barns couldn't hold it all.

The man said to himself, "I have so much. What should I do with all of my grain? Hmm....I know. I will tear down my barns. I will build even bigger barns to keep all of my stuff. After that, I will take life easy because I will have enough things to last me for many years. I will eat, drink, and be merry because I have so much stuff!"

That very night, God said to the rich man, "You are a fool. Tonight, your life will be taken away from you. Now who will get all of your possessions that you have stored up?" After telling the story Jesus said, "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up stuff for himself but is not rich in God's eyes."

The rich man had everything except for God. He thought that all of his stuff was enough. He was so wrong. The Lord gives us good things, but he hates it when we only think about the things we want. God wants us to want him above everything else. Or, as Jesus also said, "Put God's kingdom first. Do what he wants you to do. Then God will also give you all these good things!" (Matt. 6:33)
