Theme: Driving as Family Time

Our parents had it right. Want the family to do something together? Then go for a drive!

Want to talk to your teenager without being interupted by his/her cell phone? Get in the car and ask your teen to drive. Give the driving power over to your teen as you go to the sportsfield or the rehearsal hall and ask questions. They'll have lots to say as you travel together.

Getting in the car? Taking a family trip? Talk about it beforehand; collect all the phones, ipad and devices; and talk. Play some games and have some fun.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES

  • One game is to seek the 26 letters of the alphabet in order on licence plates. For those with difficulty finding I, Q, Z or other 'tricky' letters allow seekers to look at street signs. Triple letters on licence plates can be wild cards. Older kids can "collect" out-of-state/province plates they see. They can try to build words or phrases using the letter sequence in the plates. Each family member choose a food location and look to spell the word. The winner gets to choose the restaurant!
  • I spy
  • Sing!
  • See how high you can count when everyone in the car contributes one number at a time, without taking turns. Example: Mom says one. Silence. Dad says two. John and Marcia say three at the same time! Back to zero.
  • Count the... can be anything: cows, telephone poles, headlights, train cars, blue pickup trucks — you name it. Shouting out the thing to keep track of is all that is required.
  • Tell your favorite story. Not a movie or a audio book or even a KC program! Tell your story and have your children tell theirs.
  • MEMORY VERSE

    Psalm 126:2

Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then they said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.”
