BIBLE VERSE:Mark 5:1-20
The Story of Jesus and Legion
Narrator: Jesus is the ruler over all things. He calmed a storm on Lake Galilee, showing his power over nature. He healed a man who had leprosy, showing his power over disease. And when he brought a little girl back to life, He showed his power over death. In this story, we’ll see him show his power over all creation, including the demons that followed Satan.
Disciple One: Come on, we aren’t too far from shore! Put your backs into it. The wind and waves won’t do all the work.
Disciple Two: (muttering to his neighbour) I’ll be glad to get out of this boat!
Disciple Three: (muttering back) Not more glad than I’ll be! I love the master, (stressing) but who is he?
Disciple Two: (muttering) I thought we were going to drown for sure when the waves broke over the boat.
Disciple Three: (muttering) But then he just stood up and told the storm to be quiet!
Disciple Two: Even the wind and waves obey him!
Disciple One: We made it! Phew. This lake crossing was a little too exciting for my comfort.
Villager 1: Here, let us help you. (Sounds of men pulling a boat ashore) Welcome to Gerasenes (J EHR - uh - seens).
Legion: (off in the distance, calling out, repeatedly and coming closer through the next dialogue) Jesus! Jesus! Son of God in heaven!
Disciple Two: Who’s that?
Villager 2: (in a panic) Take your boat and get away! That man coming from the tombs has an evil spirit in him.
Disciple Three: Evil Spirit? What do you mean?
Villager 1: He lives in the graveyard, and no one is able to tie him up anymore, not even with a chain. No one can control him! Night and day we hear him in the graveyard or on the hills, yelling and cutting himself with stones.
Disciples: Let’s get out of here! Jesus, let’s go. You can’t get out of the boat, Jesus. Come on everyone; we need to protect the master. Jesus!
Jesus: Come out of this man, you evil spirit!
Legion: (at the top of his voice) Jesus, Son of God in heaven, what do you want with me? Promise me in God’s name that you won’t torture me!
Jesus: What is your name?
Legion: My name is Legion, because I have many evil spirits. We beg you, son of the Most High God, do not send us away. We beg you. Do not force us to go.
(A new idea comes) Let us go into that herd of pigs!
Narrator: Jesus let them go, and they went out of the man and into the pigs. The whole herd of about two thousand pigs rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned. The men taking care of the pigs ran to the town and the farms to spread the news. Then the people came out to see what had happened.
(Angry voices approach from a distance. All the villagers talk over each other, overlapping their speeches, many extra comments and angry shots given)
Villager 1: You can see the dead animals over there. All that money is gone.
Villager 2: Wait, look! isn’t that…?
Villager 3: Sitting there, dressed and in his right mind.
Villager 1: It is him, and he’s sitting with that man Jesus and his disciples.
Villager 2: A man possessed by demons now healed?
Villager 3: Demons going into pigs? Who is this Jesus?
Villager 1: These men have got to go!
Villager 2: This is terrifying. Is he a magician?
Villager 3: Jesus, you and all your men must leave our village!
Villager 2: We don’t want you here!
People continue to beg Jesus and the disciples to leave
Man who was Legion: Jesus, Master, I beg you, take me with you. Let me come with you!
Jesus: No, friend. Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how good he has been to you.
Narrator: The man went away into the region near the ten cities and began telling everyone how much Jesus had done for him. Everyone who heard what had happened was amazed.
