Healthy Boundaries

Henry Cloud and John Townsend contend that "Christians often focus so much on being loving and giving that they forget their own limits and limitations." If this sounds like something you've struggled with, they offer several books that teach us how to set healthy boundaries.

Boundaries (Zondervan, 1992) is written from a Christian perspective and seeks to give its readers the tools to set healthy boundaries in all aspects of their lives including family, work, and even themselves. This book describes what healthy boundaries look like, common mistakes we make, and how to deal with conflicts.

Boundaries with Teens (Townsend, Zondervan, 2006) focuses on parents of teen-agers and uses biblically based principles to guide parents dealing with

  • disrespectful attitudes or behaviors.
  • setting healthy limits in loving ways.
  • dealing with big and small problems.
  • guiding teens to set and respect their own healthy limits.

It's not culturally popular to have limits these days, and yet God has called to live our lives within boundaries. Both of these books not only paint pictures of boundary-less lives vs lives lived within healthy boundaries, but also give specific strategies to make living with helpful limits achievable for us and for our children.
