Mighty to Save
Happy 2011! Beginning a brand new year is a great time to stop and focus on God. One aspect of God that we can celebrate and explore with our children is that God is “Mighty to Save.” Zephaniah 3:17 says, “The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.”
Here are some ideas to connect this truth within our families. God is mighty to save has the connotation that not only is God powerful and able to do mighty things, but also that he is willing to use his power to save his people. Read Bible stories of both Old and New Testament people who have been saved by God. Talk about your own stories of God being powerful and faithful in your life. Ask others to share their stories. Go online for stories: www.crwrc.org (the website for the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee) has newsletters and pictures from their field staff that detail how God is working right now around the world.
When praying together, use words like “powerful, mighty, able and willing” to praise God. Reinforce with children that when they pray, they are talking to a very powerful Father who loves them. Find songs to play that sing of God’s power. Memorize Zephaniah 3:17 as a family.
A new year is a great time to reflect upon our awesome God who made us, who redeemed us, and who is Mighty to Save!
