A Word About Work

Service-Working: Positive attitudes about work.

Saying the memory verse together at suppertime will imprint it on the hearts of your children forever.

Colossians 3:23-24

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.

Some people say that work is a necessary evil. But that is not how the Bible views work. Already in the Garden of Eden, before sin entered the world, God gave Adam and Eve work to do. And, the Bible calls what God did in creating the world "work." The most important work we can do is preaching the gospel. But how we do our regular work can be the most powerful preaching we ever do. Do we do our work well? Do we do it cheerfully? Can the people we work for and work with see the God we serve by the way that we serve them? Our prayer as we work can be the prayer of Moses in Psalm 90:17, "May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us: establish the work of our hands for us-yes, establish the work of our hands.

This question is meant to help the children develop a biblical understanding of God, who He is and what He does. The "answer" is not meant for parents to read to their children. Rather its purpose is to assist parents in guiding the conversation to this biblical understanding. We encourage you to use an open Bible in this conversation, building biblical literacy and well as a biblical theology.

What do you think are important jobs? What do you think are unimportant jobs? Does it matter how we do an unimportant job? Why is it always important to do our best in everything that we do?

Because in everything we do we either honor God or we dishonor God. If we do a good job washing a floor or giving a speech we can show that we our real boss is God and we want to do our best for him. Also, read and discuss these verses with your children: Ecclesiastes 9:10 - "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might." Proverbs 22:29 – "Do you see someone who does good work? He will serve kings; he won't serve ordinary people." 2 Thessalonians 3:10 – "Anyone who will not work, will not eat."

Is there a job that you don't like to do? Your homework? Cleaning your room? Cleaning up after dinner? This week think about how when you do your work you are really working for God and do your very best. Then resolve to have this attitude for all your work all the time.
