The Long Goodbye

THEME

God-Worshiping: Not fearing death because Christ has overcome!

MEMORY VERSE

Saying the memory verse together at suppertime will imprint it on the hearts of your children forever.

1 Corinthians 15:54

Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”

NOTES

What happens after we die? A big question! But one that kids wonder about, especially when someone they know or love dies. The Bible doesn't tell us much about life after death, but Grandpa's answer to the question is all we really need to know. Grandpa explains that what happens after we die depends on the way we live here on earth. If we recognize our sin and our need for a savior; if we rely on Jesus to save us from our sins; and if we direct all our work and activity to honoring Jesus, we are assured of an eternal home in heaven. But if we think we can do without Jesus here on earth, then we will live without Jesus in eternity too.

Knowing that we and our friends and neighbors belong to Jesus does take the sting out of death, because then we know that death is not the final word. We do not grieve as those who have no hope. We grieve with the expectation of seeing them again, when we all gather in heaven with Jesus.

GOOD QUESTION

This question is meant to help the children develop a biblical understanding of God, who He is and what He does. The "answer" is not meant for parents to read to their children. Rather its purpose is to assist parents in guiding the conversation to this biblical understanding. We encourage you to use an open Bible in this conversation, building biblical literacy and well as a biblical theology.

Q.

This episode takes a good look at what people believe about death. Make a list of the different ideas. What does scripture say about death?

A.

In the episode, the characters thought about the science view of the body going back to the earth and nothing happening in an after-life. They also talked about restarting and getting a do-over. Scripture talks about heaven and God's judgment.

SO WHAT?

Do you know what will happen to you when you die? Have you decided to follow Jesus? Do you know someone who needs to know about Jesus and about heaven? Will you pray for that person today? Can you tell that person about Jesus?
