NARRATOR

Throughout the Bible, God makes special promises to His people. Let’s listen to this story about two people who kept waiting for an answer to prayer.

SCENE 1 – Abraham’s tent, interior

(ABRAHAM, SARAH)

We are inside Abraham’s tent. We hear Abraham calling from the outside as running footsteps draw nearer.

ABRAHAM

Sarah! Sarah!

Tent flap flies open.

ABRAHAM

Sarah! Where are you?

SARAH

(soothingly) Abraham, I’m right here. What’s so important that you nearly hurt yourself running in here?

ABRAHAM

Hurry! Get three large measures of your best flour, knead it into dough, and bake some bread.

SARAH

I know you like my bread, but why so much? Are you that hungry?

ABRAHAM

No, no! Not for me. For our visitors!

SARAH

Visitors?

ABRAHAM

Yes, three men. SPECIAL men.

(Excited, pausing occasionally to catch his breath)

I was sitting outside and out of nowhere three men were suddenly standing there! I ran to meet them and bowed to the ground.

I said, “My lord, if it pleases you, stop here for a while. Rest in the shade while my servants bring water to wash your feet. Then let me prepare some food to refresh you before you continue on your journey.”

SARAH

I will start the bread right away.

ABRAHAM

Good. I will have a servant prepare a calf for a meal. Thank you, Sarah.

SCENE 2 – Tent interior

(SARAH, VOICE 1, VOICE 2, VOICE 3, ABRAHAM)

Muffled voices outside the tent

SARAH

(to herself)The men must be finished with their meal. I hear them talking outside.

VOICE 1

(from outside)Abraham, where is Sarah, your wife?

SARAH

(surprised)They’re talking about me.

VOICE 2

(outside)Yes, where is Sarah?

ABRAHAM

Sarah is inside the tent.

VOICE 3

I will return to you about this time next year, and your wife, Sarah, will have a son! SARAH A son?

(Sarah laughs to herself.) How could a worn-out woman like me have a child, especially when my husband is also so old?

VOICE 3

Why did Sarah laugh?

SARAH

(Gasps) They know I laughed?

VOICE 2

And why did Sarah say, ‘Can an old woman like me have a baby?’

SARAH

(afraid) How did they hear?

VOICE 1

Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.

Sarah steps out of the tent

SARAH

(nervously)I … I didn’t laugh.

VOICE 3

No, you did laugh.

SCENE 3 – Desert exterior, day

(SARAH, ABRAHAM, GOD)

SARAH

Who … who were those men?

ABRAHAM

Sarah, we have been visited by the Lord.

SARAH

I was so afraid, Abraham.

ABRAHAM

Well, if it makes you feel a little better, so was I.

SARAH

Do you think what they told us will really happen?

ABRAHAM

If I’ve learned anything in all my years, it’s to trust the Lord to bring to pass what he says He will do.

SARAH

But we are so old!

ABRAHAM

The Lord will make a way, Sarah. We must trust Him. Why, if I hadn’t, we’d never have left our homeland those many years ago.

SARAH

I remember those times.

ABRAHAM

So do I. Like it was yesterday.

FLASHBACK. Land of UR. Music Transition

GOD

Abram!

ABRAHAM

(startled) Who calls me?

GOD

Abram!

ABRAHAM

(Afraid) Y-yes, Lord. Your servant is listening.

GOD

Abram, Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.

ABRAHAM

Yes, Lord.

GOD

I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you. I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.

Return to present.

ABRAHAM

God told me then that my children will be more in number than the stars in the sky.

SARAH

I know ... but I would be happy with just one child, Abraham.

SCENE 4

(SARAH, ABRAHAM)

A baby makes one soft cry, then stops and settles into contented cooing.

SARAH

Look at our son, Abraham, he’s so beautiful. (Sarah laughs)

ABRAHAM

Isaac is the blessing of God’s promise. And it makes me happy to see that he brings you laughter.

SARAH

Yes, God is so good.

ABRAHAM

(suddenly serious as if remembering something important) Sarah!

SARAH

(concerned)What is it?

ABRAHAM

How is our supply of flour?

SARAH

We always have plenty of flour. Why do you ask now?

ABRAHAM

Those men will be returning soon, just as they promised when they told us we’d have a son. We’ll need to prepare an even better meal than last time.

SARAH

(laughing again) Yes, and we will!

NARRATOR

Through Sarah and Abraham, all peoples on earth have been blessed. Jesus was one of their descendants, and he came to earth to save all people from their sin.
