NARRATOR

Jesus is the ruler over all things. During his ministry, he showed his power over disease, death and demons. In this story, we’ll see him on Lake Galilee, where he shows his power over nature.

SCENE 1 – on land

(JAMES, JOHN, PETER, JESUS)

Sound of a crowd in the distance.

JAMES

(wearily)

What a day this has been!

JOHN

I don’t think we’ve ever seen this many people before. What do you think, Peter?

PETER

Yeah, that’s the largest crowd yet, by far. I’m just glad they’ve finally decided to go home.

Other disciples express agreement.

JOHN

Jesus has taught all day. He must be tired.

JAMES

We need to find a place to get some rest. Rabbi, do you want to stay here tonight?

JESUS

(wearily)

Let’s go over to the other side of the lake.

PETER

Whatever you want, Jesus. Come on, guys, let’s go.

JESUS

Thank you. I’m going to rest. Wake me when we’re across.

Boat pushes away from shore, splashing as men jump into the boat. Water gently lapping at the sides.

Sound of wind picking up.

JAMES

Hey Peter -- do you hear that wind?

PETER

(showing concern)

Yes, I do.

JAMES

What do you think?

PETER

We should be ok. But we all know how quickly a storm can come up on the water.

Let Jesus sleep for now, but we need to be ready in case things get rough.

SCENE 2 – On the sea

(JAMES, PETER)

Sound of wind growing stronger.

JAMES

The wind is picking up fast. And look at those clouds!

Thunder in the distance.

PETER

That’s not good.

JAMES

And we’re not even halfway across.

PETER

I know. This is going to get rough, and quickly.

(louder)

Hold on tight, brothers! Here it comes!

MUSIC indicates the passage of time. Building in urgency as the storm grows.

Wind begins to howl fiercely. Thunder rumbles. Waves strike the side of the boat.

SCENE 3 – In the boat

(JAMES, PETER, JOHN)

The storm gets worse. More wind. More thunder. More rain. More waves. A large one crashes over the side of the boat. The men are terror stricken.

JOHN

We’re taking on water!

Another large wave.

JAMES

We’re sinking! We’re going to die!

The storm continues throughout.

PETER

How can Jesus still be sleeping through this?!

JAMES

Jesus! Wake up, Master! Help us!

JOHN

Master, wake up!

JESUS begins to stir.

JAMES

Master! Help us, please!

PETER

We’re going to drown! Don’t you even care??

Storm continues. Loud thunder booms in a long rumble.

JESUS

Quiet!

Thunder stops.

JESUS

Be still!

Wind ceases. Water goes from crashing waves to gentle lapping at the sides of the boat.

JAMES

(beat)

(in awe)

The storm. It’s gone.

JOHN

What ... what just happened? How did he ...

Disciples murmur among themselves.

JESUS

Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?

PETER

(even more afraid)

Wh-who is this man?

JAMES

Even the wind and the waves obey his voice!

JOHN

He has power over nature itself!

More gentle water lapping against the boat.
