Episode Theme: Obedience

1. John 14:23 says that anyone who loves Jesus will obey his teaching. What does obedience have to do with love? Can you love someone and disobey them?

2. Noah was 600 years old when God destroyed the world with a great flood. But he trusted God. Everyone else on the earth was wicked, but “Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God” (Genesis 6:9). When God told Noah to build an ark and gather the animals, Noah obeyed (Genesis 7:5). He had probably never seen a large boat and had certainly never built one. But he loved God and obeyed. When God sent the flood, only Noah and his family were saved. As you listen to this episode, think about how obedience is the best way to show your love to God.

After You Listen

In this episode, Liz decides to go to a concert instead of listening to his mother and taking care of his aunt’s dog. He quickly learns his lesson.

1 Samuel 15:22 says that “To obey is better than sacrifice.” Sacrificing animals to the Lord was part of the law that the Israelites had to obey in the Old Testament. So, if they had to obey the law and sacrifice, why does the verse say it’s better to obey than to sacrifice?

It’s because there are two ways to obey. You can do something because you have to. Or you can do something because you love the person you’re doing it for and want to obey them. When we read the Bible or go to church or serve in some way, we should do it because we want to make the Lord happy with our obedience.
