Reflect

In this episode, Liz and Lucille try to help their new friend Kayla meet her celebrity idol, Rayleen. Kayla thinks that if she acts and dresses like her idol that she’ll get the good things that she wants in life. Liz and Lucille want to follow a different example. Lucille quotes Ephesians 5:1, “Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children.”

In 1 Peter 2:9, the writer tells us that people who follow God belong to a special group of people. The King James version of the Bible uses the word “peculiar” to describe God’s people. Peculiar means strange, odd, or unusual. How are you a peculiar member of God’s family? As a member of God’s family, you are under God’s love and care. And in thankfulness for all God has given you, you are called to live and behave like a unique child of God.

Challenge

What can make a Christian unique? Here are ten biblical characteristics that describe a Christian. You can find these characteristics all throughout the Bible. They are things that God calls Christians to “be,” not simply to “do.” And what does God call us to “be?”

  • Servant Workers
  • Justice Seekers
  • Earth Keepers
  • Community Builders
  • Creation Enjoyers
  • Idolatry Discerners
  • Order Discoverers
  • Beauty Creators
  • God Worshippers
  • Image Reflectors.

By yourself or with family members, write down these 10 characteristics on a piece of paper. Then, write down short definitions for what you think each characteristic means.

Next, have each family member choose which characteristic they think describes them best. Share examples with each other that explain why you think this characteristic describes you best.
